Max Planck Fellow Professor Heike Krieger
Heike Krieger is Professor of Public Law and International Law at Freie Universität Berlin and has, inter alia, taught at the Universities of Göttingen, Nottingham, and the Centre for Transnational Legal Studies, London. She is member of the Wissenschaftsrat (German Council of Science and Humanities) which advises the Federal Government and the governments of the German Länder (Federal States) on the development of science, research and higher education. Between 2007 and 2014 she acted as Judge at the Constitutional Court of the State of Berlin. She is co-chair of the Berlin-Potsdam-Research Group on „The International Rule of Law – Rise or Decline?“. Her research focusses on International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights Law and General International Law.
Max Planck Fellows are outstanding teachers at German universities who collaborate with Max Planck directors in joint projects. They are appointed, after nomination by the Institutes and a scientific evaluation, by the President of the Max Planck Society for five years. The joint research projects are co-financed by the Institute and additional central means (matching funds) of the Max Planck Society. With this mechanism, the Max Planck Society seeks to intensify the cooperation between Max Planck Institutes and German universities. From 1st January 2017 on Heike Krieger will work at the MPIL with a research group entitled “Towards a Proceduralization of International Law?“ in order to inquire into the question as to whether a turn to a procedural approach to international law reflects more fundamental structural changes of the international order. She will, inter alia, pursue a book project on „Due Diligence in International Law“ and supervise another book project on „Wahrheit und Völkerrecht“ in co-operation with Anne Peters.
